Jardin du Château de Maintenon
The history of the Château de Maintenon goes back to the Middle Ages, as the square XIIth century tower testifies.
The garden was created in the XVIIth century.
Design for the parterres is due to Le Nôtre, as well as the layout of the two park avenues, one of which bears his name. The other one is named “Racine”, recording the memory of the famous poet who, at Maintenon, worked on his tragedies “Esther” and “Athalie” destined for the performance by the young ladies of Saint-Cyr who were pupils of the Education Home founded by Madame de Maintenon for young girls of noble rank with no fortune.
The aqueduct built by Vauban and LaHire at the request of Louis the XIVth to bring the water of River Eure to Versailles was intended as a 3-storey construction, but was left unfinished.
