Jardin du Château de Châteaudun

Type :

  • Renaissance garden
  • Orchard

The Renaissance-inspired gardens can only be seen from inside the property walls. They are composed of three main areas: a terrace laid out as an orchard, a square-patterned area and the lawn parterre as a prolongation the castle’s honour court.
The orchard terrace holds cherry trees and apple trees trained in horizontal cordons; this offers a view on the Loir valley and part of the town.
The square-patterned garden, also known as the “Jardin des Humeurs”, is situated at the foot of the dunjon.
The squares are enclosed with low bow hedges. Medicinal, utilitarian, culinary herbs are cultivated in themes. Scientific labelling comes in support of the plantations.
The lawn parterre is a prolongation of this garden.
A small wall and a flowerbed punctuated with cone-trimmed yew marks the limit between the honour court and the parterre.
