Jardin du domaine de George Sand

Type :

  • writer/artist garden

A magic made of subtlety and originality, in this space invisible presences roam – it is the delicate product of the love of writer George Sand for the land of Nohant and the Vallée Noire. George Sand lived most of her life in this countryseat in the Black Valley. There she organised the garden, which belongs integrally with the house and the village of Nohant.
An orchard, a rose garden, a flower garden, a small wood imbued with romantic spirit and the cemetery all offer remembrances of the writer.
The historical park covering 6 hectares has been a property of the French State since 1961 and is undergoing a careful restoration. This work will aim to emphasize both the atmosphere of the garden George Sand knew as a child and the plantations and paths she added herself.
Two styles oppose their influences in this garden: the XVIIIth century heralding ideas of a bucolic utopia and the naturalist stance of the XIXth century.
Visitors will first view the court of honour in the shade of a great yew then be led through an avenue lined with peonies to the rose garden with climbers and annuals.
The kitchen garden and the orchard are each given a large expanse and are separated by an alley lined with perennials.
Old fruit storage cases are laid on the grassland prairie. Behind, an avenue crosses through the wooded park, between the pine forest and the grove, leading to the pond. The cedar garden and the scent garden (honeysuckle, clematitis and weigela) will remind visitors that this garden, through the times, has always made itself favourable to strolling and inspiration.
