Jardins médiévaux du Château de Culan

Type :

  • Renaissance garden

Medieval gardens revived at the foot of a fortress!
Coming down from the castle erected on a rocky cliff, follow the path dug in stone and lined with aromatics to the Arnon river banks, where the medieval garden with medicinal plants, box and arching rose trees are. The Jardin de Notre-Dame and the Jardin du Roc open on to magnificent views of the valley, the castle and the church. On the same estate you will also discover a vegetable garden, a green maze and thousands of old roses.
The Château Forteresse de Culan: an unforgettable silhouette! Overhanging the top of a steep rock at the gorge of River Arnon (a listed site) south of the Cher region in Berry (the centre of France), Culan fortress is a fortified castle out of a child’s dreams. A strong medieval castle, sober and imposing with its great front (over 70m long), it was built between the end of the XIIth century and the XVth century. The walls still bear on their top a unique series of wooden hourds (galleries) that have vanished everywhere else. The Château de Culan has hosted some prestigious guests: Joan of Arc, Louis XI, the Marquise de Sévigné, author George Sand and Chopin. The castle was once the property of Sully, of the Prince de Condé, of Louvois…
The castle with its current decoration and grand furnishings is owned by a private family, which opens its home for B&B and visits.
