Parc du Château de Villeprévost

Type :

  • Formal french garden

Laid out in 1756 following Le Nôtre’s principles, the park at Villeprévost was created as a celebration of the squire’s love for his young wife.
To please the lady of the house whose birthday was celebrated on August 15th, the central axis was drawn on the exact point where the sun sets on the horizon on that date. It is a gift to a beloved wife.
Past the gates, the visitor enters a courtyard decorated with clipped box and yew and finds the chapel and the dovecote under the shade of a huge plane tree that is several hundreds of years old. Then, walking across the residence, the eyes is charmed by the “trou de lorgnette” opening on the skies and the sun of August 15th, at the far end of the Green Carpet and of the Great Avenue lined with clipped arbour. A walk along the avenues that cross in a star shape reveals, through the arbour, an extremely diversified wild flora covering the undergrowth.
Herbaceous peonies, so rare in this region, are extremely vigorous here and spread everywhere. A stroll in the park is an invitation to daydreaming and poetry, especially on summer nights, with the “Villeprévost à la nuit tombée” programme, a garden’s tale with musical episodes and fantasy characters appearing in the illuminated park.
