The art of gardening brought to an extreme degree, a work of constant care.
A unique testimony to Renaissance gardens, Villandry owes its reputation to the outstanding complex of terraced gardens, composed over three levels.
These gardens must be contemplated from above, to fully appreciate the rigour and beauty of their composition… or looked at very closely to reveal every detail of their charm and subtlety.
The water garden, le “Jardin d’eau”On the higher level, in a vast cloister of lime tree, a pool collects the water required to irrigate the gardens and supply all its fountains.
The decorative pleasure garden, le “Jardin décoratif d’agrément”
On a level with the castle, it is composed of three sections: the “Jardin d’amour”, divided in four parterres (tender love, passionate love, flighty love and tragic love), the “Jardin de la musique” with box, yew and flowers drawing symbolic figures and the “Jardin des simples” with aromatic, condiment or medicinal herbs.
The ornamental vegetable garden
Down below, spreading over more than 12,500 m2, lies the surprising vegetable garden with decorative squares. This garden is fully renewed twice a year with a spring scheme and a summer scheme.
