Jardin de l'Abbaye - square Lucien Beaufrère

Type :

  • Recent creation
  • Town garden/park

There is a symbol in the history of this modern garden.
A work of the Angevin statuary sculptor Henry Karcher, the square is situated on a small island between the Canal de Berry and the river Yèvre. His wish was to create a peaceful garden, after the trauma of the First World War. This achievement is a testimony to the “Art Déco” period between the wars.
A carpet of water separates the garden from the war memorial, an impressive sculpted work, bearing the message of fraternity with a grandeur matching its meaning. The town garden has a central composition laid out in a half circle, symbolised by half-columns surmounted by ironwork lanterns. The design is marked by clipped yew and box, doubled with cotoneasters forming a regular hedge.
The square is undergoing general restoration, to be completed in September 2007.
